Spots Often Missed When Applying Sunscreen on the Face and Neck

Even if you think you’re applying sunscreen liberally to your face, certain spots tend to get overlooked, leading to uneven protection, premature aging, and sun damage over time. Here are the most commonly missed areas on the face and neck and why they matter.

1. Eyelids & Under-Eyes

The eyelids have some of the thinnest skin on the body and are highly prone to sun damage. Skipping sunscreen here can lead to wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and even skin cancers.
If sunscreen stings your eyes, try a mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide) or an SPF eye cream specifically formulated for this area.

Tip: Apply a tiny amount of sunscreen with your ring finger, gently patting it in instead of rubbing. You can top it off with some powder to prevent it from moving into the eyes.

2. Eyebrows

People often avoid their eyebrows to prevent white residue, but this leaves the skin underneath exposed. The skin here is just as vulnerable to sunburn and damage.

Tip: Use a chemical or tinted mineral sunscreen for application without leaving a white cast.

3. Hairline & Scalp Edges

The hairline is often skipped, leading to uneven tanning and sunspots.
If you have a receding hairline, thin hair, or a middle part, your scalp is exposed and needs protection too. Sun damage here can cause peeling, discoloration, and even skin cancer over time.

Tip: Use a powder sunscreen or a spray sunscreen on your hairline and scalp without making your hair greasy.

4. Ears (Especially the Tops and Back)

Since ears stick out, they get direct sun exposure but are often forgotten when applying sunscreen.

Tip:
Use a lightweight lotion or stick sunscreen to coat these areas without making them greasy.

5. Sides of the Nose & Creases

People usually apply sunscreen to the bridge of the nose but forget the sides and creases. These areas can burn easily and are prone to hyperpigmentation and redness.

Tip: When applying sunscreen, take a moment to press it into the creases of your nose to ensure full coverage.

6. Lips & Around the Mouth

The skin on your lips is extremely thin and lacks melanin, making it highly prone to burns and sun damage. Skipping sun protection here can lead to dryness, premature aging, and even lip cancer.

Tip: Use an SPF lip balm (SPF 30 or higher) and reapply frequently since eating and drinking wear it off.

7. Jawline & Under the Chin

Most people focus on their cheeks and forehead but neglect the jawline and underside of the chin. These areas still get sun exposure, especially from reflected UV rays.

Tip: Blend your sunscreen downward from your face to fully cover your jawline and chin.

8. Sides & Back of the Neck

People often apply sunscreen to the front of the neck but forget the sides and back. Wrinkles, sunspots, and even skin cancer commonly appear on the back of the neck due to chronic sun exposure.

Tip: Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, and if you have short hair or wear ponytails, be extra diligent about covering the back of your neck.

Don’t Forget: Hands!

Not exactly on the face or neck, but hands get tons of sun exposure and are one of the first places to show aging. When we wash our hands, sunscreen gets rubbed off, leaving them vulnerable to sunspots and wrinkles.

Tip: Apply sunscreen to the backs of your hands and reapply after washing.
